Facts About Lice

What are They?

Head lice are small parasitic insects about the size of a sesame seed and live on the human scalp. They are brownish, tan or gray in color and move by crawling.

Lice do not travel great distances on their own. In fact, they can only survive away from a human host for 48 hours.

Lifecycle of Lice

A lice egg is called a "nit" and attaches itself to the hair shaft of a human. It takes 10 days for the nit to mature to an adult. After 10 days, the adult can reproduce and lay anywhere from 50 to 150 eggs over the next twenty eight days.
